Our Terms & Conditions

Helpful information about bookings, travel conditions, local customs, and what to expect when exploring the San Blas Islands.

These Terms & Conditions apply to all tours, trips, services, bookings, and travel experiences offered by San Blas Frontera.

Last Update: June 14, 2026

Before You Book

By making a booking with San Blas Frontera, you confirm that you have read, understood, and accepted these Terms & Conditions.

Travel in Kuna Yala is unlike conventional resort tourism. To help set expectations, here are a few important things to know:

  • Travel in San Blas is weather and sea-condition dependent.
  • Safety always takes priority over published itineraries.
  • Specific islands, activities, wildlife sightings, and snorkeling conditions cannot be guaranteed.
  • Accommodation is rustic and reflects local island conditions.
  • We operate within an autonomous Indigenous territory where local community decisions may occasionally affect travel plans.
  • Travel insurance is strongly recommended.

Terms & Conditions

1. About San Blas Frontera

San Blas Frontera offers travel experiences in Kuna Yala, also known as the San Blas Islands, an autonomous Indigenous territory in Panama.

Our trips take place in a remote island environment where weather, sea conditions, local community decisions, and infrastructure limitations may affect travel plans. We do our best to provide safe, authentic, and memorable experiences while guests acknowledge that flexibility is an important part of visiting Kuna Yala.

2. Bookings & Payments

A booking is confirmed only once the required payment or deposit has been successfully received and confirmed by San Blas Frontera or our authorized booking platform.

Prices are listed in U.S. Dollars (USD), unless otherwise stated.

The required deposit, payment schedule, and final payment deadline will be displayed during the booking process and form part of the booking agreement.

Depending on their location, guests may be offered the option to pay in their local currency using one or more available payment methods.

Payment processing fees, currency conversion fees, bank charges, foreign transaction fees, and other fees associated with the selected payment method may apply. Any such fees will be displayed during the booking process and are the responsibility of the guest.

San Blas Frontera is not responsible for exchange rate fluctuations, bank fees, or differences resulting from currency conversion.

The remaining balance must be paid no later than 72 hours before the scheduled departure time. Bookings made within 72 hours of departure require full payment at the time of booking.

Guests who fail to complete payment by the applicable deadline may have their booking cancelled.

3. Cancellations & Refunds

Cancellation requests must be submitted in writing by email or through the booking platform used for the reservation.

The applicable payment schedule, cancellation policy, and refund terms are displayed during the booking process and confirmed in your booking confirmation.

Unless otherwise stated, the following cancellation policy applies:

  • More than 10 days before the scheduled departure: Full refund.
  • Between 10 days and 72 hours before departure: The booking deposit is non-refundable. Any additional amounts paid will be refunded.
  • Less than 72 hours before departure: No refund.

Bookings made within 72 hours of departure require full payment at the time of booking and are non-refundable.

Guests may transfer their booking to another traveler free of charge until departure, provided all required participant information is submitted and accepted by San Blas Frontera.

As a small local operator with limited capacity, cancellations made close to departure are often difficult to replace. For this reason, the cancellation policy applies regardless of the reason for cancellation, including illness, injury, travel disruptions, or other personal circumstances. We therefore strongly recommend purchasing comprehensive travel insurance that includes trip cancellation coverage.

Approved refunds will be issued through the original payment method whenever possible.

Payment processing fees, currency conversion fees, bank charges, and other third-party transaction fees are non-refundable.

The refunded amount may differ from the original payment due to exchange rate fluctuations or payment provider fees outside the control of San Blas Frontera.

San Blas Frontera reserves the right to make reasonable exceptions to this policy at its sole discretion. Any exception granted in an individual case shall not constitute a waiver of these Terms & Conditions or establish a precedent for future bookings.

4. Cancellations or Changes by San Blas Frontera

San Blas Frontera reserves the right to cancel, postpone, shorten, modify, or reschedule a trip when necessary due to safety, operational, weather, sea, community, governmental, or force majeure reasons.

This may include, but is not limited to:

  • Strong winds

  • Rough seas

  • Rain or storms

  • Government restrictions

  • Local authority decisions

  • Community decisions within Kuna Yala

  • Island closures

  • Safety concerns

  • Mechanical issues

  • Medical emergencies

  • Transportation disruptions

  • Other circumstances beyond our reasonable control

If San Blas Frontera cancels a trip before departure, guests may be offered a rescheduled date, travel credit, or refund, depending on the circumstances and costs already incurred.

San Blas Frontera is not responsible for indirect costs such as flights, hotels, missed connections, additional transportation, or other personal expenses.

5. Weather, Sea Conditions & Safety

Travel to and within Kuna Yala is subject to weather and sea conditions, including wind, waves, rain, currents, and changing marine conditions.

Weather forecasts for San Blas are often unreliable because they cover a large geographic area with highly variable conditions. Tours may operate in rain or cloudy weather as long as conditions are considered safe.

Safety always takes priority over any published itinerary, schedule, activity, or guest expectation.

Captains, guides, island operators, community representatives, local authorities, government authorities, and San Blas Frontera staff may modify, restrict, delay, cancel, or terminate activities or transportation whenever deemed necessary for safety or operational reasons.

Such decisions are final.

6. Itineraries & Island Visits

All itineraries, descriptions, photographs, videos, and marketing materials are intended to provide a representative example of the experience. Island conditions, beaches, vegetation, water color, and scenery may vary naturally depending on weather, season, tides, currents, and other environmental conditions.

San Blas Frontera reserves the right to modify routes, island visits, accommodations, activities, or schedules when necessary due to weather, sea conditions, safety considerations, local community decisions, availability, maintenance, or operational requirements.

Whenever possible, we will seek to provide a comparable alternative experience.

7. Transportation

Transport to and from San Blas is provided in cooperation with local licensed transportation providers.

Travel times are estimates only and may vary due to traffic, road conditions, weather, inspections, vehicle issues, guest delays, or other circumstances.

Boat transfers are subject to sea and weather conditions.

San Blas Frontera is not responsible for missed flights, missed connections, additional hotel nights, or other consequential expenses caused by transportation delays or itinerary changes.

Guests are responsible for ensuring sufficient buffer time between the scheduled return from San Blas and any onward travel arrangements.

8. Accommodation & Local Conditions

Accommodation in Kuna Yala is rustic and differs significantly from conventional hotels or resorts.

Guests acknowledge that accommodation may include:

  • Simple wooden or bamboo cabins

  • Shared bathrooms

  • Limited electricity

  • Limited freshwater

  • Limited or no air conditioning

  • Limited mobile signal

  • Limited or no internet access

Accommodation standards reflect local island conditions and should not be compared to conventional hotel or resort accommodations.

In exceptional circumstances, accommodation may need to be changed due to weather, maintenance, safety considerations, local decisions, or operational requirements. Whenever possible, a comparable alternative will be provided.

9. Food, Water & Dietary Requirements

Meals included in the tour are described on the applicable tour page or booking confirmation.

Guests must inform San Blas Frontera of dietary restrictions, allergies, or medical food requirements before departure.

We do our best to communicate dietary requirements to local providers, but due to the remote nature of Kuna Yala, food options may be limited and cross-contamination cannot be fully excluded.

Drinking water and beverages are not included unless explicitly stated in the tour description or booking confirmation.

10. Health, Fitness & Medical Conditions

Guests are responsible for ensuring that they are physically able to participate in the tour.

Travel in Kuna Yala may involve:

  • Early morning departures

  • Long car rides

  • Boat transfers

  • Wet landings

  • Boarding and exiting boats

  • Walking on sand, uneven surfaces, docks, or stairs

  • Swimming, snorkeling, kayaking, or paddleboarding

Guests must disclose relevant medical conditions, pregnancy, mobility limitations, injuries, allergies, or other circumstances that may affect their participation.

Medical facilities in Kuna Yala are limited. In the event of illness or injury, transportation to a medical facility or evacuation to mainland Panama may be necessary and will be at the guest’s expense.

Guests acknowledge that access to mainland medical facilities may be affected by weather, sea conditions, and road access restrictions. The road connecting Kuna Yala and Panama City is generally only open during daytime hours.

Guests are strongly advised to carry travel and health insurance that covers medical treatment, emergency evacuation, and air evacuation where applicable.

11. Water Activities & Adventure Travel

Swimming, snorkeling, kayaking, paddleboarding, boat travel, and other outdoor activities involve inherent risks.

Participation is voluntary and at the guest’s own risk.

Guests must follow all instructions provided by guides, captains, island staff, and local authorities.

San Blas Frontera reserves the right to restrict or prohibit participation in any activity if a guest’s condition, behavior, swimming ability, weather conditions, sea conditions, or other factors create a safety concern.

12. Marine Life, Wildlife & Natural Conditions

Marine life, wildlife sightings, coral conditions, water clarity, tides, currents, beach conditions, and underwater visibility vary naturally and cannot be guaranteed.

Guests agree to respect marine life, coral reefs, wildlife, and the natural environment and to follow all instructions provided by guides, captains, and local authorities regarding environmental protection.

13. Kuna Yala, Community Rules & Cultural Respect

Guests are visiting an autonomous Indigenous territory with its own rules, customs, traditions, and community decision-making structures.

Guests agree to respect local customs, local authorities, community leaders, island owners, guides, captains, and community members.

Guests must not remove coconuts, coral, shells, marine life, cultural items, or other natural resources without permission. Violations may result in fines, removal from the tour, or other consequences imposed by local authorities or communities.

Decisions made by local communities, island operators, sailas, community leaders, or authorities may affect itineraries, accommodations, activities, island access, or transportation. Such decisions are outside the control of San Blas Frontera.

14. Language & Guiding

San Blas Frontera makes reasonable efforts to provide guides who can communicate with guests and support the experience.

However, due to the local nature of tourism in Kuna Yala and the limited number of local guides, specific language ability cannot always be guaranteed unless explicitly confirmed in writing.

15. Guest Conduct

Guests are expected to behave respectfully toward other guests, local communities, guides, drivers, captains, island staff, and San Blas Frontera staff.

San Blas Frontera reserves the right to remove a guest from a tour without refund if the guest behaves in a way that is unsafe, abusive, intoxicated, disruptive, or in violation of local rules.

16. Personal Belongings

Guests are responsible for their personal belongings at all times.

San Blas Frontera is not responsible for loss, theft, damage, water damage, or destruction of luggage, electronic devices, passports, money, jewelry, or other personal items.

Guests are encouraged to take reasonable precautions to protect their belongings from water, weather, and loss during the trip.

17. Travel Insurance

San Blas Frontera strongly recommends comprehensive travel insurance covering:

  • Trip cancellation

  • Trip interruption

  • Medical expenses

  • Emergency evacuation

  • Personal belongings

  • Adventure activities

  • Weather-related disruptions

Guests are responsible for ensuring that their insurance policy covers the activities and destination involved in their trip.

18. Photography & Marketing

San Blas Frontera may take photographs or videos during tours for promotional purposes.

Guests who do not wish to appear in marketing materials should inform San Blas Frontera in writing before departure.

19. Limitation of Liability

To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, San Blas Frontera shall not be liable for injury, illness, death, loss, damage, delay, inconvenience, additional expenses, missed connections, or changes caused by:

  • Weather or sea conditions

  • Government actions

  • Community decisions

  • Third-party service providers

  • Transportation delays

  • Medical emergencies

  • Force majeure events

  • Guest behavior or decisions

  • Inherent risks of adventure travel

Nothing in these Terms & Conditions is intended to exclude liability where such exclusion is not permitted by law.

20. Third-Party Services

Some services are provided in cooperation with independent local providers, including transportation providers, boat captains, accommodation providers, restaurants, guides, island operators, and community operators.

While San Blas Frontera carefully coordinates the overall travel experience, each independent provider remains responsible for the services it provides. Certain aspects of the experience may also be affected by local infrastructure, community decisions, weather, sea conditions, or other circumstances beyond our reasonable control.

21. Governing Law

These Terms & Conditions are governed by the laws of the Republic of Panama.

Any dispute shall be subject to the competent jurisdiction of the courts of Panama, unless otherwise required by applicable law.

22. Acceptance

By booking with San Blas Frontera, guests confirm that they have read, understood, and accepted these Terms & Conditions.

Guests may also be required to complete a participant questionnaire and sign a separate Assumption of Risk and Liability Waiver before departure.
