Essential information

Getting to San Blas and other information

The San Blas islands are not easy to access and most likely unlike most places you might have visited. Read this to know what to expect.

On what days can I come
You are welcome to come stay with us every day, Monday to Sunday, including holidays!
Where do we meet?
We will meet at around 8.30am in Cartí, Panama, which is a small dock in the Comarca Kuna Yala (San Blas). From here our boat will pick you up and bring you to our island. On the last day we will bring you back here at around 3/3.30pm.
How to get to San Blas
There is no public transport to San Blas! You can get to San Blas either via plane from Panama City or via the only road connecting San Blas with Panama City. The road is departing from highway 1, leading through the San Blas hills to Cartí, where we will pick you up. From Cartí, boats are departing to the surrounding islands. The road can only be accessed with cars equipped with 4×4 (SUVs or pickups). If you do not wish to drive yourself, shared taxis with a special permit from the Kuna Congress (for 4-7 people) leave daily at 5.30am from Panama City to Cartí and return in the afternoons from Cartí to Panama City, arriving approx. at 7pm. You have to make a reservation in advance via your travel agency. It is 25 USD per person each way (50 USD for the return ride) – please contact us if we should organize the taxi ride for you.

What is the governmental entrance fee
Every visitor to San Blas has to pay an entry fee to the Congress of Kuna Yala, our official government. See it like a tourist tax. It is collected upon entering the Comarca Kuna Yala in Nusugandi (along the road to Cartí). The entrance fee is 20 USD for foreigners and 5 USD for Panamanians or residents.

Additionally, at the port of Cartí a charge of 2 USD is required per visitor for using the facilities.

What should I pack
Please make sure to pack the following items: passport, cash (no cards accepted, no ATMs), sun protection, towels, swimming gear, snorkeling equipment, plenty of water to drink, flash light.

You can also purchase beverages, water or beer on the island.

You might get wet on the boat ride, depending on the weather and wind. Also make sure to keep your personal belongings (passport, cash, phone, camera etc.) in a drybag or plastic bag.

How can I book
Please use the booking formular here to book your San Blas islands day trip.

Alternatively you can write us an email at reservaciones@sanblasfrontera.com with the desired date, how many persons you are, if it shall be a private or a dorm room and if you wish to book the car ride as well.

What payment methods do you accept?
At the moment we can only accept payments in cash (US Dollar only). Please pay us on the first day in cash.
Boat rides
As everyone in San Blas, we travel in speedboats with outboard motors between islands. Boat rides are max. 30mins at a time. Our captains are licensed and boats equipped with safety vests.
Meals
Meals in San Blas typically consist of freshly caught fish or seafood (alternatively chicken) with rice or platanos and vegetables or salad. Vegetarian or vegan options available on request.
Accommodation

As in most of San Blas, our cabins are built in the traditional Kuna style made from all natural materials bamboo and palm leaves. This unique style ensures a constant air circulation so the cabins don’t heat up and keep rain outside. Our cabins are equipped with beds, mattresses and sheets, pillows and blankets. Bathrooms and showers are western style. Electricity is available only for certain hours during the day.

Island

Our cabins are located on one of the larger islands with a large stretch of perfect white sand beach and plenty of opportunities for snorkeling around the island. As one of the very few beach islands, there is also a small Kuna village on the island where you can experience our culture first hand or buy original Kuna souvenirs such as Mola or bracelets.
